Legal

Privacy notice

Effective November 2, 2026. This notice is intended to meet the California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA) and the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, the "CCPA").

1. Who is responsible and how this notice works

1.1 Controller. The business responsible for your personal information is LIKE A KING INC., a New York corporation doing business as Clarté ("Clarté", "we", "us"). To reach us about privacy, choose "Privacy and personal data" on our contact form. We do not publish a street address, email address or telephone number for privacy requests; the contact form is our designated method for them.

1.2 Scope. This notice applies to personal information we collect through this website, the Clarté Concierge, our contact and estimate forms, calls and text messages with us, and the services we perform for clients (the "Services"). It uses the same defined terms as our Terms of Service. "Personal information" means information that identifies, relates to or could reasonably be linked to a particular person or household.

1.3 Other notices. Applicants and Team members receive a separate notice. See also our Cookies and local storage notice and our Text messages and calls notice.

1.4 Voluntary application. Whether or not the CCPA's thresholds apply to us, we extend the rights in Section 8 to California residents.

2. Information we collect

We collect only the personal information we need. The categories below use the names the CCPA uses and show where each is collected and how long we keep it.

2.1 Information you give us. This includes the details you enter in forms, messages, estimate choices, and what you say in calls, texts and chats with us.

2.2 Information from the Visit. The Team records check-in and check-out times, checklists and Visit Photos. Visit Photos are shared only with you.

2.3 Information from service providers. Our payment processor confirms that payment was made and gives us limited information about it. Where we perform a background check on a Team member, the check concerns that individual and not you.

2.4 Technical information. Our servers record basic request logs for security and to stop spam. We keep a one-way hash of your IP address, not the address itself, for abuse prevention.

2.5 What we do not collect. We do not collect biometric information, health information, precise geolocation from your device, or information about children. We do not use advertising cookies, analytics pixels or social-media pixels on this website.

2.6 Please don't share some information. Please do not send gate codes, alarm codes, passwords, card numbers or government identification numbers through the Concierge or contact form. We will provide a secure method for Access Details when you book.

3. Notice at collection (California)

3.1 Purpose. At or before the point of collection, California law requires that we tell you the categories of personal information we collect, the purposes, whether we sell or share it, and how long we keep it. The table in Section 2 states the categories and retention periods. This Section states the purposes and our practices on sale and sharing.

3.2 Purposes. We collect and use personal information to: (a) respond to your enquiries and prepare Estimates; (b) schedule, perform and follow up on Visits; (c) take payment and keep financial records; (d) keep your Access Details safe and log their use; (e) check the quality of our work and handle re-clean, damage and insurance claims; (f) communicate with you, including by text message with your consent; (g) secure the website, prevent fraud and abuse and enforce our Terms; (h) improve the Services and train our own Team; (i) comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests; and (j) establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

3.3 No sale or sharing. We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We have not done so in the preceding 12 months. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.

3.4 Sensitive personal information. We collect Access Details, and sometimes your home address or financial details at the point of payment (the processor handles the card number). We use them only to perform the Services you ask for and as the law allows, and we do not use them to infer characteristics about you. Accordingly, no right to limit use is triggered, but you may ask us to confirm or restrict it under Section 8.

3.5 Where to find this notice. A short version of this notice is shown on the website's first page and linked in the footer.

4. The Clarté AI team (AI chat)

4.1 They are AI. Claire Olivia Hayes, Vivian Brooks, Harper Lane, Grace Whitman and Audrey Sinclair are AI characters, not people and not employees. They tell you they are AI, as California Business and Professions Code sections 17940 through 17943 require. See How our AI characters work.

4.2 How it works. The messages you type are sent to our AI model provider (NVIDIA, through its API) only to generate a reply. Before a message is stored or sent, we remove what looks like a card number, Social Security number, password or gate or alarm code. The conversation is kept in your own browser tab (session storage) only if you allow Preferences. The AI cannot book, charge, hire or decide anything: every change goes through a confirmation button that you press, and a person decides bookings, charges, refunds, hiring steps and complaints.

4.3 Requests the AI files. If you confirm a consultation request, application, callback, issue report or feedback, we save the details you confirmed (for example your name, email, ZIP and a short note) in our customer records, where the Clarté team can see them. If you ask for a person, we save the conversation so far (with sensitive patterns removed) with your request so the person has the context.

4.4 Memory. If you are signed in as a client, we keep a memory profile so the AI can remember you: preferences you state, a short summary of notes about your household, and a one-line summary of your last five conversations. You can view, edit and delete it under “What Claire remembers” in your account, and you can ask any AI character to “forget me”. If you are not signed in, nothing is remembered unless you tick “Remember this conversation on this device”; that sets a random-id cookie (aim, strictly for this purpose) and keeps a memory profile for 30 days, after which it is deleted automatically. Unticking it, or choosing Forget, deletes the profile at once. Signed-in memory is kept until you delete it or close your account.

4.5 Review and retention. Staff may review requests and conversations that were escalated, and the tool-call audit log (which agent used which tool and whether it succeeded), for quality and safety. Escalated conversations are kept for 24 months; the audit log for 4 years. Our AI model provider processes your messages under its terms and, under our agreement with it, may not use them to advertise to you.

4.6 Limits. The AI can make mistakes and its answers do not bind us. Do not share access details, passwords or card numbers in chat.

5. How we share personal information

5.1 Service providers. We disclose personal information for a business purpose to service providers and contractors that help us operate and that are bound by contract to use it only for our instructions. They include providers of hosting (in Germany), email, payment processing (currently Stripe), text messaging, background checks for Team members, the AI model that supports the Concierge, and the font service described in Section 6. Each receives only what it needs.

5.2 Partners. Where a Partner performs your Visit, we give its assigned Team what is needed to perform it, including the address and, on the day, Access Details.

5.3 Licensed professionals. If you ask us to introduce a Licensed Contractor, a licensed alarm company or a registered trauma scene practitioner, we share your details with them only after you ask.

5.4 Legal and safety. We may disclose information to comply with law or legal process, to protect rights, safety and property, to our insurers and professional advisers, and to investigate fraud.

5.5 Business transfers. If we are involved in a merger, financing or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred, subject to this notice or notice to you.

5.6 Categories disclosed. In the preceding 12 months we have disclosed identifiers, customer records, commercial information and property information to service providers and Partners for business purposes only. We have disclosed Access Details only to the Team assigned to Visits.

6. Fonts, cookies and local storage

This website loads its typefaces from Google Fonts, so your browser sends your IP address and browser details to Google when it fetches them. We use no advertising cookies, tracking cookies, third-party analytics tools or social-media pixels; our own first-party, cookieless analytics are described in Section 6A. Your privacy choices are kept in a first-party cookie, and the chat conversation lives in your browser tab's session storage. See the Cookies and local storage notice for a table. Photography on the website is used under the Unsplash License.

6A. Analytics (first-party and cookieless)

To see how many people visit and which pages help them, our own server counts visits. No third-party script is involved and no cookie is set. When you open a page, your browser sends the page address, the page that referred you, any campaign tags in the link (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign), your screen width, a random session code that lives only in your browser tab's session storage, and named events such as starting an estimate or reaching a step of the booking form. We derive a visitor code by hashing your IP address and browser details together with a salt that changes every day and is never stored with the data, so a visitor cannot be recognized from one day to the next. We never store your IP address. We read your country, region and city only if our hosting provider adds them to the request. We ignore known bots, we do not count visits by our own team, and if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track we store only an anonymous pageview, with no visitor code and no session code. Analytics rows are kept for 14 months and then deleted.

7. How long we keep personal information

7.1 Periods. We keep personal information no longer than reasonably necessary for the purposes in Section 3, as follows: enquiries for up to 24 months; client and visit records for as long as you are a client and up to 7 years afterward for tax, accounting and insurance purposes; Visit Photos for 12 months; and the other categories for the periods in the table in Section 2.

7.2 Longer retention. We may keep information longer where needed to resolve a claim or dispute, comply with a legal hold, or as the law requires. When the period ends, we delete or de-identify the information.

8. Your California privacy rights

8.1 Rights. If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

  1. Know. Ask what personal information we have collected about you in the last 12 months (or, to the extent allowed, longer), including the categories, the sources, the purposes, the categories of recipients and the specific pieces of information.
  2. Delete. Ask us to delete personal information we collected from you, subject to exceptions the law allows, such as completing a transaction, security, legal obligations and defending claims.
  3. Correct. Ask us to correct inaccurate personal information about you.
  4. Limit. Ask us to limit our use and disclosure of sensitive personal information to what is necessary to perform the Services. We already do so.
  5. Opt out of sale and sharing. Opt out of the sale of your personal information and of its sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do neither, so there is nothing to opt out of, but you may confirm it.
  6. Non-discrimination. Exercise these rights without receiving worse service, a higher price or a lower quality. We will not retaliate against you for doing so.

8.2 How to make a request. Choose "Privacy and personal data" on our contact form, say which right you want to exercise, and give enough detail for us to identify you. You may make a request up to twice in 12 months for the right to know.

8.3 Verification. We verify requests by matching the details you give us (such as your name, email and a recent Visit date) with our records. For a request to know specific pieces of information or to delete sensitive information, we may ask for additional confirmation. We will not ask for more information than we need, and we will not ask you to create an account. We will not disclose Access Details in response to a request unless we have verified you.

8.4 Authorized agents. An authorized agent may make a request for you with your signed permission, or with a power of attorney, and we may ask you to verify your identity directly or to confirm with us that you gave the permission.

8.5 Timing. We confirm receipt within 10 business days and respond within 45 days. If we need more time, we may extend by up to another 45 days and will tell you why. If we deny a request in whole or part, we will tell you the reason and any right you have to ask a regulator.

8.6 Notice of financial incentive. We do not offer financial incentives for personal information.

8.7 Shine the Light. California Civil Code section 1798.83 lets California residents ask once a year about the disclosure of their personal information to third parties for their direct marketing. We make no such disclosures. You may ask through the contact form.

8.8 Complaints. You may contact the California Privacy Protection Agency or the California Attorney General about our practices.

9. Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track

We honor the Global Privacy Control signal sent by your browser as a valid request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information, and as a request to turn off optional analytics. When we detect it, our privacy choices window says “Global Privacy Control detected: honored” and we count only an anonymous pageview, with no visitor code and no session code. We do not sell or share personal information, so the signal changes nothing else. We treat “Do Not Track” the same way, and we do not track you across other websites.

10. Your choices

10.1 Requests. You may ask to see, correct or delete your personal information, as in Section 8, at any time.

10.2 Marketing. You may opt out of marketing messages at any time. Reply STOP to a text message, use the link in an email, or tell us on the contact form. We will still send service messages about your Booking. See Text messages and calls.

10.3 The privacy choices center. On your first visit, and again whenever this notice changes (version 2026-11-02), a banner offers three buttons of equal size: Accept all, Reject non-essential and Customize. Customize opens a window with four categories: (1) Strictly necessary, always on: keeps you signed in, protects sign-in from forgery, remembers your choice, and holds a team member's offline time-clock punch; (2) Preferences: remembers conveniences in your browser tab, such as unfinished booking answers, your chat conversation and your last dashboard tab; (3) First-party analytics: our own cookieless visit counts (Section 6A), off unless you turn it on; and (4) Marketing: not used, shown off and disabled because we use no advertising or marketing cookies, pixels or third-party trackers. You can reopen the window at any time from “Your privacy choices” (with the privacy-options icon) at the bottom of every page, and you can change or withdraw a choice as easily as you made it. Until you choose, nothing optional runs except that, because you asked for a booking or estimate, your answers are kept in your own tab so you do not retype them; choosing Reject non-essential clears them.

10.3A Our record of your choice. Your choice is stored in a first-party cookie named cc (version, analytics, preferences), for up to 12 months. We also log each decision on our server with the policy version, the time, your choices, whether Global Privacy Control was on, and a keyed hash of your IP address and browser (never the IP address itself), so we can show what you agreed to. We keep these records for 24 months.

10.3B Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information; Limit the Use of My Sensitive Personal Information. We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of. We use sensitive personal information (such as access details you choose to give us, or a team member's consented location at a time clock punch) only to provide the service you asked for and not to infer characteristics about you, so there is no further use to limit. You can still send a request from the privacy choices window; it is logged with a 45-day response date and we confirm your identity before sharing or deleting anything.

10.4 Access Details. You may ask us at any time to delete your Access Details.

11. Call recording and text messages

11.1 Recording. We may record calls for quality, training and record-keeping. We tell you at the start of any recorded call, as California Penal Code sections 632 and 632.7 require, and you may decline by saying so. If you object, we will continue by the contact form.

11.2 Texts. We send text messages only as described in Text messages and calls. Mobile information is not shared with third parties or affiliates for their marketing purposes.

12. Background checks for our Team

Each Team member is background-checked, with their written consent, before their first Visit. The checks are made by a consumer reporting agency under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act and the California Fair Chance Act, with the required notices and an individualized assessment before any adverse decision. These checks concern our Team members and applicants, not Clients, and their records are kept separately under access controls. Team members and applicants receive a separate notice of their own rights.

13. Applicants and partner companies

If you apply to join our Team or propose to work with us as a Partner through the contact form, we collect the details you give us, such as your name, contact information, experience, references and licenses or insurance. We use them to evaluate your application, to verify qualifications and, with your consent, to run a background check as described in Section 12. We keep unsuccessful applications for up to 24 months. Applicants who are California residents have the rights in Section 8, and we give them a separate notice at collection.

13A. Team members: notice at collection (California)

This section is for people who work or apply to work with us. Categories we collect: identifiers (name, email, phone, photo, sign-in details); professional information (services offered, languages, experience, service-area ZIP codes, weekly hours and days off); compliance documents (identity document, background-check consent and result, certificates such as bloodborne pathogens and first aid, insurance for partner companies); timekeeping and pay records (clock-in and clock-out times, breaks, job check-ins, timesheets, rate, tips and reimbursements); and, only with your written consent, an optional approximate location (rounded to about 100 meters) recorded at the moment you clock in or out or check in or out of a job. We do not track location continuously, and you can withdraw the consent at any time in your profile.

Purposes: scheduling and dispatch, verifying arrival at a client home, paying wages and keeping the wage and hour records California law requires, checking that required documents are current, and keeping clients' homes safe. Background checks: after a conditional offer only, and with your written authorization, we use either (a) Checkr, Inc., a consumer reporting agency, which collects your disclosure and identifying information itself (we never receive your Social Security number or date of birth) and tells us a status and a result, or (b) a review of public records by us: a restricted-party screen against U.S. government lists (the Consolidated Screening List, which includes Treasury OFAC), the U.S. Department of Justice National Sex Offender Public Website, and the Los Angeles Superior Court criminal case index. Only convictions may be considered; we do not consider arrests without conviction, diversion, sealed, dismissed or expunged records, or juvenile records. You may ask for a copy of any public records we obtain and, if we are considering withdrawing an offer, you receive an individualized assessment, a written notice and at least five business days to respond. We do not use California's Megan's Law website for employment decisions. E-Verify is used only after hire. Background-check status and reports are visible only to the owner.

Retention: time and pay records are kept for 4 years; background-check and public-records review records for 4 years; unsuccessful applications for up to 24 months. We do not sell or share this information. Questions or requests: use the contact form.

13B. Accounts and sign-in

You can create an account with an email address and password, or continue with Google or Microsoft. If you use Google or Microsoft, we receive your name, your email address and an account identifier from that provider, and nothing else; we never receive your provider password. Passwords are stored only as a salted scrypt hash. Gate and alarm codes and saved home addresses are stored encrypted and are shown only to the team members assigned to your visit, on the day of the visit. We send service emails (booking received, confirmation, reminders and password resets) from our own address.

14. Security

13.1 Safeguards. We use encryption in transit, encrypted storage for Access Details, access logs, and the principle of least access, so each person sees only what they need. Card numbers are handled by our payment processor, not by us. Access Details are shown only to the Team assigned to your Visit, on the day, and every view is logged.

13.2 Limits. No system is perfectly secure. Please use strong credentials and tell us if you suspect unauthorized access.

13.3 Breach notice. If a security breach affects your personal information, we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires, including under California Civil Code section 1798.82, without unreasonable delay.

15. Children

The website and our Services are intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or, for sale or sharing, from anyone under 16). If you believe a child has given us information, tell us on the contact form and we will delete it.

16. Visitors outside the United States

15.1 Where processing occurs. Clarté serves clients in California. Our website is hosted in Germany (on our hosting provider's servers) and our service providers process personal information in the United States.

15.2 Legal bases. If you contact us from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we process your details to respond to your request and to take steps you ask us to take before a contract (and to perform a contract), to comply with legal obligations, and for our legitimate interests in running and securing our business, which are not overridden by your rights. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time.

15.3 Your rights. You may ask to access, correct, delete or export your data, to object to or restrict its processing, and to complain to your local data protection authority.

15.4 Transfers. Where personal information is transferred to the United States, we rely on safeguards the law recognizes, such as standard contractual clauses or certification of the recipient.

17. Changes to this notice

When we update this notice, we change the version and date at the top. For material changes, we will tell existing clients by email or on the website before they take effect, and where the law requires, ask for your consent. The previous version is available on request through the contact form.

18. Contact

For any question or request about this notice or your personal information, please use the contact form and choose "Privacy and personal data." LIKE A KING INC. is the responsible business.
